Cassadee Pope and Hey Monday Succesfully Replicate Paramore Band Model

02.09.2010 · Posted in Bands, Musicians by David Carlson

Hey Monday most likely never set out to “replicate” a band model, but they have quickly and most assuredly joined the ranks of Paramore and Flyleaf as the latest band with a female lead and male supporting cast.

Discovered at a regional music conference when she was still just in high school, Pope created interest among music executives early on. It wasn’t until she formed a band with friends (formerly called Blake) that she was signed by Columbia Records. In October 2008 they released their first album, Hold On Tight. With tracks such as “Homecoming” and “How You Love Me Now” gaining quick popularity, the band burst onto the scene.

I previously wrote a post about The Cab and featured their song “Take My Hand” Remix. This song features Cassadee Pope of Hey Monday, and it shows the power of collaboration between artists. Thankfully for fans of this track The Cab and Hey Monday will be touring together at the upcoming AP tour and likely will play the song live.

For a little sample of Hey Monday, listen to “How you love me now”:

Michael Jackson’s Doctor Pleads Not Guilty to Charges of Manslaughter

02.09.2010 · Posted in Legal by Chris Bartels

The New York Times reported yesterday that Michael Jackson’s doctor was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Conrad Murray had provided propofol, along with other narcotics, to Michael a few days before his death.

Dr. Murray pleaded not guilty and his lawyer claims that nothing he gave Michael should have caused his death. If he is convicted, he could face up to four years in prison.

The New York Times also said that “Mr. Jackson’s use of the drug brought attention to so-called Hollywood health care, in which the rich and famous manage to persuade doctors to treat their maladies, real or perceived, with specific prescription medicines.”

The Stills Are In A Holding Pattern

This is a post by guest blogger Dane Nordine. He posts regularly for noisecake.

Forming about a decade ago, The Stills have honed an arena-friendly anthem-based rock that is infectious and best played loud. With the release of 2008’s Oceans Will Rise behind them, and the acclaim of being the only multi-winner at the 2009 Juno Awards — the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys — what’s next for Montreal’s The Stills?

Well, after making an inquiry of their label, Arts & Crafts, apparently, not much. The only response I received was, “Nothing new to report. The band is playing a show in late February in Vancouver during the Olympics and they’re currently working on their next record. writing, demoing… No idea of release date yet.” Yet, with a rest from endless touring and some new studio time, the band has yet to announce a release date for their next album.

Well, here is hoping that one of Canada’s rising stars can keep up the momentum. In the meantime, we will have to keep Oceans Will Rise on heavy rotation. Here is one of the gems off that disc, I’m With You:

King had originally wrote this song for the group The Drifters, but they didn’t want to record it. So one night after recording got done early, King played the song for the producers and they liked it so much they brought the studio musicians in to record the song.

“Best Of My Love”

A widely covered, and widely recognized song, the Eagles felt the love with this tune.

“I Love You”
Climax Blues Band
Drastic Steps (1988)

Written by bassist Derek Holt, this song is obviously about cleaning up your act, and finding the one who will make you do it.

“Beautiful Girl”
INXS
Welcome To Wherever You Are (1992)

Writer Andrew Farriss was inspired to write this after his daughter was born, saying that the inspiration came when he realized how wonderful it is to have someone else in your life besides yourself.

“No One’s Gonna Love You”
Band Of Horses
Cease To Begin (2007)

Sometimes love is hard, and this song defines that.

Muse to Release Documentary DVD Under Review

02.08.2010 · Posted in Video/Film by Chris Bartels

Known well for their live performances and their edgy fusion of progressive rock and alternative electronica rock, Muse has enjoyed a highly successful career behind a large international fan base. They have released five full-length studio, dating back to 1999’s Showbiz, and one live album, HAARP, in 2008.

Now the English rock outfit is set to release a documentary DVD entitled Under Review in March. The documentary covers the early days with rare live performances and interview footage. Also included will be photos, news reports, among other things. It is said to be “the finest documentary to date on this extraordinary band, the music they make and the lives they lead.”

Under Review is out March 23, 2010 via Sexy Intellectual and MVD Visual.

Who Was That Kid?

02.08.2010 · Posted in Bands, Concert Review, Musicians by David Carlson

This is a guest blog post from Dane Nordine. He frequently posts on nosiecake and we hope you enjoy his posts as much as we do.

Watching The Who’s Super Bowl Halftime show, it was impossible not to recognize founders Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey. It was also difficult not to watch the guy stealing some of their spotlight in the background. Who was that “kid” playing drums?

With Keith Moon and John Entwistle having moved on to rock and roll heaven, replacements have had to fill their spots for some time now. Not so much the “kid” at 44, drummer Zak Starkey, son of famous dad Ringo Starr, has actually been with them since 1996.

Starkey received his first drum kit from his idol, original Who drummer Keith Moon. He then built his career as a steady session player for bands like the Icicle Works, the Waterboys, and the Lightning Seeds, did some time as a member of the reformed Steve Winwood led Spenser Davis Group, pounded sticks for Oasis and even did some work with ex-Smiths Johnny Marr.

It never ceases to amaze me how the rock and roll world is so intricately webbed.

Lecrae, Flame, Json offer hope for Haiti

02.08.2010 · Posted in Concert Review, Musicians, New Music by David Carlson

Last Friday night christian rappers Lecrae, Flame, and Json played a special show at Club 3 degrees in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to a packed house. With over 1,000+ in attendance they put on a show to remember with the emphasis on raising money for Haiti relief efforts.

Traditionally Christian music has been criticized for appealing to ‘families’ and not to all audiences. Particularly some have claimed a lack of talent in that music genre. Lecrae, Flame, and Json are just three talented rappers trying to transform the relatively unknown ‘Christian rap’ genre. With a passion for their work and a commitment to creating quality Christian rap, they have built a large fan base that will only grow in the future.

Raising over $10,000 from ticket sales alone, there was likely another $10,000+ raised from merchandise. Rapper Lecrae responded to Haiti by writing a song that reflects the emotions he felt after the disaster. Titled “Far Away,” Lecrae’s message is one of trust in God in the face of disaster, despite the inevitable questioning of one’s faith when disaster strikes.

Lecrae made a music video of “Far Away” and 600 DVDs were on hand to raise funds for Haiti. Below is a youtube of the song:
