Great Song You Might Not Know: Wish You Were Here – Incubus

02.15.2010 · Posted in Bands by David Carlson

All of us have songs that we absolutely love. We think the song is great but realize that many others have not even heard the song before and the odds they will hear it dwindle as the track ages.

So today I would like to share with you a song by my favorite band, Incubus, titled “Wish You Were Here.”

I dig my toes into the sand
The ocean looks like a thousand diamonds
Strewn across a blue blanket
I lean against the wind
Pretend that I am weightless
And in this moment I am happy…happy

I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I wish you were here

I lay my head onto the sand
The sky resembles a back lit canopy
With holes punched in it
I’m counting UFOs
I signal them with my lighter
And in this moment I am happy…happy

I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I wish you were here
Wish you were here

The world’s a roller coaster
And I am not strapped in
Maybe I should hold with care
But my hands are busy in the air saying:

I wish you were here
I wish you were

I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I wish you were here
Wish you were here

6 Major Music Blogs Shut Down

02.15.2010 · Posted in Music Industry by David Carlson

The Guardian reported last Thursday that six music blogs were shut down by Google because of violations:

In what critics are calling “musicblogocide 2010″, Google has deleted at least six popular music blogs that it claims violated copyright law. These sites, hosted by Google’s Blogger and Blogspot services, received notices only after their sites – and years of archives – were wiped from the internet.

“We’d like to inform you that we’ve received another complaint regarding your blog,” begins the cheerful letter received by each of the owners of Pop Tarts, Masala, I Rock Cleveland, To Die By Your Side, It’s a Rap and Living Ears. All of these are music-blogs – sites that write about music and post MP3s of what they are discussing. “Upon review of your account, we’ve noted that your blog has repeatedly violated Blogger’s Terms of Service … [and] we’ve been forced to remove your blog. Thank you for your understanding.”

As someone who has been a blogger for over two years and has used Google’s blogger for multiple blogs, Google’s actions are at least somewhat alarming.

Blogging takes hours and hours of work day in and day out. To see content gone with a click would be devastating to any blogger.

Perhaps the sites, as was reported, violated the terms of service. While that might be true I believe the owner of the site should have the ability to have backup copies of all the content. Unfortunately this was not the case.

Productivity As Defined By The Strokes

News of The Strokes’ work on a fourth full-length has been met with much relief.  Fears have been stilled and hopes fulfilled.  Possibly as evidence of their forthcoming fourth, possibly on accident, but most likely simply because of the sort of people they are, The Strokes have released a video of their work in Manhattan’s Avatar Studios.  Here it is, in all its glory, productivity as defined by The Strokes:

Pink Floyd Living Vicariously Through The Flaming Lips

Long broken-up rock legends Pink Floyd live on, through the appreciation of their music by psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips.  The Lips recently rerecorded Dark Side Of The Moon with Stardeath and the White Dwarfs (frontman Wayne Coyne’s nephew’s band), following it up with a hugely successful New Years’ Eve show in which they played the album in its entirety.  The show was such a success that they’ve decided to do it again at Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee this June.

About the show to come, Coyne told Spinner:

We do a Flaming Lips set then starting about 2:30 we do this ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ thing…  We might as well just be jamming on some freak-out music…  I’m sure people will be having their own party while we play this space rock or whatever. In that sense it’s perfect for that.

You can see the whole Dark Side Of The Moon set from New Years’ Eve via YouTube here.

Another Amazing Swedish Band

Released last year on Subliminal Sounds, Swedish folk/psych-rock band The Amazing’s self-titled LP is a fair sea, rising on songs like opener “The Kirwan Song” and “Code II” and gently falling into acoustic troughs on songs like “Beach House” and “Is It Likely,” before finally coming to rest on “The Strangest Thing.” Sound intriguing? It should be, as this album is well worth a focused listen. Grab your headphones and get ready for a beautiful journey.
