60’s

“Time Of The Season”
The Zombies
Odessey And Oracle (1968)

Largely used as a song to identify the late 60’s, and famous for the usage of call and response verses.

70’s

“30 Days In The Hole”
Humble Pie
Smokin’ (1972)

With its many references to drugs, it fits right in with the album title Smokin’. This song fared well on radio, but never made any chart value.

80’s

“Doot Doot”
Freur
Doot Doot (1983)

Freur’s one and only hit single, they would release a handful of other tracks after this one, but they never found the same success.

90’s

“Learn To Fly”
Foo Fighters
There Is Nothing Left To Loose (1999)

The first single from their third album, this song is one of Foo Fighter’s most successful and recognizable early songs.

00’s

“Everything In Its Right Place”
Radiohead
Kid A (2000)

This gorgeous work of art is an expression of relief to Radiohead’s frustrations with recording. It is also a widely covered and respected song.

Caribou Releases New “Odessa” Video

02.19.2010 · Posted in New Music, Track Review, Video/Film by Jordan Nimlos

Canadian indie-electronic artist Caribou, comprised of Daniel Snaith and friends, first received wide international attention with their 2008 LP Andorra, winner of the 2008 Polaris Prize.  Now, with another full-length on the way (Swim), anticipation of new music from this band continues to build, especially with the release of a video for one of the upcoming album’s tracks, “Odessa.”  This is an odd video, to say the least, but with music like this, you can pretty much do whatever you want.  “Odessa” is a straight shot of Caribou: indie-psych-electronic with a twist of funk.

Ridiculous Music Video #5

02.19.2010 · Posted in Ridiculous Music Video by David Carlson

Well it’s Friday and you know what that means right? Time for another absolutely ridiculous music video!

This week I have to give a special thanks to Exurban Jon. The name of the song is “Apache” and was originally recorded and released by the British group The Shadows. Since then it has been covered by many bands, including Tommy Seebach Band that is featured in this video.

Toki Wright Offers Name-Your-Price Album Download for Haiti Support

02.19.2010 · Posted in New Music by Chris Bartels

The enormous international support for the victims of Haiti during the aftermath of the country’s massive earthquake has been encouraging. From MTV’s massive Hope for Haiti show to Radiohead’s last-minute L.A. benefit show, support has come from all different types of artists from all different places.

Minneapolis-based independent rap label Rhymesayers did not miss the opportunity to help out either, and hosted a Haiti benefit show at First Avenue Nightclub on February 9th. Artists on the bill included Brother Ali, Sage Francis and B. Dolan, I Self Divine, Sims, and Toki Wright. Through ticket purchases and donations, Rhymesayers was able to raise over $30,000 for the cause.

Toki Wright didn’t stop there. The popular emcee decided to release his new 8-song EP BlackMale as a name-your-price download, with every penny going to Haiti relief efforts.

You can download the album at Rhymesayers.com.

Outstanding Lyric: Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd

02.18.2010 · Posted in Outstanding Lyric by Charlie Wirth

This song can connect on so many different levels. At the time, one of Pink Floyd’s former band members Syd Barrett was going through serious health and mental issues due to heavy drug abuse. He visited the band in the studio while they were recording the Wish You Were Here album and they didn’t even recognized him at first. He seemed completely detached from reality, which possibly rooted the meaning behind this song.

Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We’re just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
